Coping With Osteoarthritis: Mobility Assistance Options For You

by Raymond Sanders

When you are experiencing the progressive joint stiffness and pain that are associated with osteoarthritis, you know how much the symptoms of the condition can affect your life, particularly your mobility. While you can try to take the medications prescribed by your doctor to slow the progression of your osteoarthritis, you may still find yourself in need of further support and assistance with your mobility. Get to know some of the ways that you can cope with the mobility issues associated with osteoarthritis so that you can continue to get to and from the places you need to go and live your life as you see fit.

Try Physical Therapy or Yoga

One of the ways that you can improve upon your mobility when you are suffering from osteoarthritis is to try to exercise and move the affected joints as much as possible. However, you do not want to do so without some guidance from professionals, as you can injure yourself if you do the wrong exercises or overdo it.

Yoga is one option to improve upon your mobility and joint flexibility. The stretching and strength-building poses and movements in yoga will gently increase flexibility in your joints without forcing you to push yourself past any limitations or move the joints in ways that could cause injury.

Similarly, physical therapy is an option to help you regain strength, control, and flexibility in your joints. A physical therapist will guide you through a series of exercises to perform during your sessions as well as at home. They will also help you to treat pain and discomfort with heat or cold therapies or even whirlpool treatments to improve your condition and comfort.

Consider Mobility Assistance Equipment

Because osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition, you may find yourself at a point where you need assistance to get around. There are many options for medical equipment available for you to choose from.

If you are still able to walk but need assistance and support to remain on your feet, you could get yourself a cane or walker. These low-tech devices increase your stability and support as you move around your home or out in the world.

However, if you find that your osteoarthritis makes it impossible for you to walk around without excruciating pain or discomfort, you may want to consider an electric wheelchair. Electric wheelchairs are comfortable and easy to control so that you do not have to put in much unneeded effort or cause yourself strain to navigate the world. A simple joystick can control your wheelchair so that even if you have osteoarthritis in your hands as well as your legs you will be able to manage the device.
